LATER THAT EVENING, after the ladies had retired, Armand walked slowly up the steps toward his bedchamber. Torches flickered in their sconces, and the light of a full moon shone through the windows.

Despite saying he would apologize to Adelaide again when they were alone, he’d managed to avoid being solely in her company. She was too tempting, and he was finding it more and more difficult to remember that their love was supposed to be a lie.

She, however, seemed to have no difficulty with that, or with setting the stage for the end of their betrothal. Her flirtation with the Irishman had certainly seemed genuine….

Unfortunately, his jealousy wasn’t completely feigned. When he’d seen Adelaide smiling and talking with that Irishman, he’d wanted to throttle the man for his presumption.

That reaction had to be some last, unquenchable bastion of primitive male pride, because he didn’t love Adelaide—which was good. Even if the quarrel in the hall had been intended only for show, it was uncomfortably like the arguments between his father and his stepmother, forcibly reminding him that he wanted a pliant, quiet, amiable wife—a bride completely different from Lady Adelaide D’Averette.
